Reserve volunteer educators (Docents) bring a natural history, interactive presentation into the third grade classroom, targeting Title I (low-to-moderate income) schools whose students’ life circumstances may create barriers to participating in outdoor education programs. The program aligns with California’s elementary education standards.
The main goal of the outreach program is to increase awareness of the natural world and the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve while encouraging a healthy appreciation of wildlife and conservation. The program creates a fun learning experience using natural history artifacts, displays and hands-on activities to teach age-appropriate science and conservation. As students grow with the program, it is our aspiration that their appreciation of the natural world will lead to promoting environmental stewardship as young adults.
