The “Music Under the Oaks”
concert was first conceived in August 2004. It was a to
be a celebration of John Denver’s
music. After a year of raising funds to cover all of the
costs, the first annual concert was held on
September
24th, 2005.
John Denver was a special
icon in American Music; his songs from the heart touched
his listeners in a unique and wonderful way. John, a native
of Southern California, developed a connection with nature
and he reflected that relationship in his music. He was
lost to us in a tragic plane crash in Santa Monica Bay
in October 1997. His musical legacy and environmental
dedication live on.
John Adams & Friends
were brought from Colorado for the first performance.
John has the ability to bring back the memories of Denver
in a very special way. If you close your eyes and listen
to Adams & Friends perform songs like “Sunshine
on my Shoulders” or “Eagles and Horses”,
your mind can build a picture of the slender blonde-haired
man who for many years delighted listeners with his easy
yet inspiring music.
The proceeds that evening from ticket
sales, a raffle, silent auction, beverage sales, art sales,
and CD sales raised $12,000. This represents 26% of the
money required to insure the continuation of the 3rd grade
education program at the Reserve. This success lead to
planning the second “Music Under the Oaks”
concert. John Adams & Friends returned
by popular demand and performed on September 9t
h,
2006. This time $15,000 was raised,
1/3 of the funds required.
The third annual ‘Music
Under the Oaks’ concert was again a success.
The figures show ~$14,100 to help fund the continuation
of the 3rd grade program. The stormy weather did not keep
away most of the audience and the drizzle did not chase
them away in the first half. John Adams & Friends
captivated the audience with Rocky Mountain High music.
Joelle James was a big hit. It was an unexpected treat
to have Jim Currie join John on stage for ‘Country
Roads’. Jim did the voice over for the John Denver
movie.
A special thanks to the first ever ‘Concert
Sponsor’ level donor, the Pechanga Band of Luiseno
Indians. They came through for the Foundation and 3rd
graders again.
All of the volunteers again did
a great job under difficult circumstances and I wish to
thank all of them. The past three years as event chair
have been very rewarding and a big thank you to all who
supported my efforts.
Proceeds from the event will continue
the funding of the 3rd grade education program. Students
are given a wonderful opportunity to visit the Plateau
and learn firsthand about the native plants and wildlife
at the Ecological Reserve. See our Educational
Program page.
